About AI Economy & Market

What it is about

The artificial intelligence market covers all economic activity tied to the development, commercialisation and integration of AI systems within companies and services. It spans the supply of models, applied solutions, managed services and the underlying computing infrastructure (servers, cloud computing). This momentum comes with a wave of venture capital investment, mergers and acquisitions, and strategic shifts across the technology ecosystem.

Issues and debates

The market concentrates several tensions. Real profitability first: beyond the announcements, few companies have demonstrated a clear and lasting return on their deployments; infrastructure costs remain high and profitable use cases limited to certain areas. Market concentration among a handful of technology giants raises questions of dependence and sovereignty: these players control the base technology, the infrastructure and the main applications, creating barriers to entry. Regulation stays central: a legal framework fragmented across regions creates uncertainty for providers and a competitive imbalance, while debates on ethics, data and copyright remain open.

European framework and regulation

In Europe, the framework is set by the AI Act, which imposes graduated obligations according to the level of risk, with phased application timelines. The European Commission oversees implementation, alongside the GDPR for data protection. At national level, economic ministries steer strategies to develop the AI ecosystem, through public investment and calls for projects. National data protection and sector authorities act within their respective remits. On the private side, cloud providers, software vendors, specialised start-ups and consultants shape the offering, while open source movements and public research seek to counterbalance proprietary concentration.

What ActuIA follows
