Miratlas, a deeptech specializing in atmospheric characterization, has decided to entrust the hosting of its strategic data to PHOCEA DC, a newly inaugurated eco-responsible data center in Marseille. A unique expertise in the service of optical communications
The atmosphere is a complex medium that disrupts the propagation of laser beams due to turbulence, diffraction, and absorption by suspended particles. These phenomena alter the signal quality and limit measurement precision.
Based in Pertuis, in the Vaucluse region,
Miratlas was founded in 2018 by
Jean-Edouard Communal,
Frédéric Jabet, and
Karine Chevalier to address this issue. It designs, produces, and markets instruments that analyze atmospheric conditions, particularly cloud cover and turbulence, and has quickly established itself as a global reference in atmospheric analysis applied to optical telecommunications, astronomy, and Earth observation.
Thanks to its SkyMonitors, deployed on five continents, the company provides real-time crucial data to optimize optical data transmission by laser, both in space and on Earth, as well as to improve climate modeling. This positioning is part of the dynamics of new-generation optical communications, such as LaserCom, which is set to sustainably transform satellite and terrestrial networks.
PHOCEA DC: a strategic choice
Inaugurated last January, this 1.2 MW
data center has been set up in a former 1,700 m² logistics warehouse, located in the 3rd arrondissement of Marseille. Designed according to Tier 3 standards, it guarantees a high level of reliability and availability for Miratlas's infrastructures. Its PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) of 1.2 places it among the most efficient installations in its category. By choosing PHOCEA DC,
Miratlas opts for sovereignty and proximity to host its data.
"We are committed to the sovereignty of our infrastructures, which are 100% hosted in France, independently and in partnership with national players. By choosing PHOCEA DC, we are taking an important step in the development and expansion of our public and private Hybrid Cloud. Like us, it is a locally rooted player, both serious, professional, and human-sized, who, we have no doubt, will be available and responsive to our needs."
To better understand
What is PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) and why is it important for data centers like PHOCEA DC?
PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) is a metric used to measure the energy efficiency of a data center. A PUE of 1.2, like that of PHOCEA DC, is considered very efficient. This metric is crucial as it allows data centers to reduce their energy consumption, impacting directly costs and environmental footprint.
How do atmospheric turbulences affect laser data transmission and why is this a key area for Miratlas?
Atmospheric turbulences cause rapid variations in the air's refractive index, resulting in the scattering and distortion of laser beams. This can disrupt data transmission, reducing signal accuracy and reliability. For Miratlas, understanding and modeling these effects is crucial for optimizing optical communication systems, particularly for satellite networks and Earth observation.
