The "Ma thèse en 180 secondes" competition, inspired by the "Three minute thesis", conceived at the University of Queensland in Australia, is organized in France by France Universités, the CNRS, and the University of Lyon. Doctoral students have three minutes to present and explain their thesis topic in a clear, entertaining and accessible way. It is possible to attend the national final, which will take place on May 31 at the Bourse du Travail in Lyon, or to follow it online. The astrophysicist Hélène Courtois will be the godmother of this event, Isabelle Bonardi, Amélie Cordier, Paul Dequidt, Axel Villard-Faure will be part of the jury. For this 9th edition, 28 university groups and universities have organized the first stage of the "My thesis in 180 seconds" competition in their institutions. Nearly 600 doctoral students participated in this "regional" final, 58 of whom won the jury's first prize or the public's prize and were selected for the semi-final held in Paris in early April. The 16 finalists will now compete in Lyon on May 31. After the journalist Fred Courant in 2021, it is the astrophysicist Hélène Courtois, professor at the University Claude Bernard Lyon 1, very invested in the transmission of knowledge, who will be the godmother of this final 2022. The public will be able to attend this event free of charge on site, within the limits of available seats, or live from 6:30 pm on the Facebook page, the YouTube channel and on the competition website. Internet users will be able to vote for their favorite finalist and contribute to his or her winning the "public prize". High school students from the Lyon Academy will also be present at the event and will vote for their favorite finalist, who will then win the "high school students' prize". Finally, three prizes will be awarded by the jury composed of :
  • Isabelle Bonardi, Director of Pop'Sciences, Culture, Science and Society Department of the University of Lyon
  • Amélie Cordier, researcher in artificial intelligence and president of the Lyon-iS-Ai collective
  • Paul Dequidt, PhD in signal and image processing,1st prize of the jury and public prize of the national final of MT180 2021
  • Axel Villard-Faure, science journalist and program manager in the Discovery & Knowledge unit of ARTE France
  • The 5th member of the jury, representing the world of research, will soon be known.
The winner of the jury's first prize will represent France at the international final in Montreal, Quebec, on October 6. Co-hosted by Emilie Martin du Fou, science journalist for Ciel & Espace and France 5, and Pierre Girard, science journalist at ARTE, this final will also reward the three jury prizes by offering them a day's immersion in ARTE France's Discovery & Knowledge unit.
