Opening of the Franco-Bavarian AI-CUP challenge “AI for a better world” on March 9

At the beginning of 2021, President Emmanuel Macron and Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder pledged to intensify cooperation between Bavaria and France in the field of technology and innovation. In this context, on October 23, the launch of an Artificial Intelligence competition named “AI Cup” was announced. Mathilde Mougeot, holder of the Industrial Chair “Industrial Data Analytics and Machine Learning” of ENS Paris-Saclay and her team who organize jointly with the University of Passau, this new challenge whose theme is “AI for a better world” unveiled the modalities.

AI-Cup

AI-Cup is a Franco-Bavarian initiative to support the future generation of AI entrepreneurs and to create innovative AI start-ups in Europe. It is aimed at students or PhD students from the academic field in Bavaria and France, who can demonstrate not only their scientific skills in the field of Artificial Intelligence but also their entrepreneurial skills. The eight selected teams can receive up to €95,000 in support to develop their innovative ideas and receive one year of coaching to create their start-up. Organized by the University of Passau (Germany) and the École Normale Supérieure Paris Saclay (France) in collaboration with ATOS (European leader in cybersecurity, cloud and high-performance computing), the AI-Cup mobilizes a number of French and German innovation partners, committed to contributing to European cooperation on AI.

The organizing teams have developed, in cooperation with data providers, a set of tasks that participants will have to complete in order to demonstrate both their data science talents and their entrepreneurial ability to carry out a start-up project.

The 5 data providers selected are:

  • Deutsche Bahn Regio,
  • E.ON,
  • Trading Hub Europe Germany,
  • The French Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies Commission (CEA),
  • The Borelli Center.

Participants in the challenge will have to use this data to develop an “AI for a better world”. Professor Dr. Harald Kosch, Vice President for Academic and IT Infrastructure at the University of Passau, explains:

“We are looking for sustainable ideas on how to use AI to solve current problems in the areas of healthcare, smart mobility and decarbonization.
