Historiquement dénommé Commissariat à l'énergie atomique (CEA), il a changé de nom en 2010 en élargissant son champ aux énergies alternatives tout en conservant son sigle.
Les principaux centres de recherche du CEA sont le centre de Saclay (Essonne) et le centre de Fontenay-aux-Roses (Hauts de Seine), le site de Marcoule (Gard), le centre de Cadarache (Bouches du Rhône), le centre de Grenoble (dans l'Isère), le centre Le Ripault (près de Tours).
