Qualcomm launches four new Snapdragon 4G and 5G wireless platforms

The American company Qualcomm is a recognized specialist in the market of chips for premium android smartphones. To boost the performance of these processors for 3G, 4G and 5G smartphones, it announced four new Snapdragons processors in late October.

Although the smartphone market is very important (80% of French people are equipped with them), the difficulties in supplying semiconductors following the pandemic have slowed down manufacturing. The offers of the various brands do not offer a real differentiation between models of the same range, and the market is saturated.

Until now, most manufacturers have used a standard SoC. To stand out from their competitors, some of them have decided to develop their own SoC in-house, called custom SoC (Google Tensor for example), Oppo also plans to develop a custom ARM SoC by 2023-2024. On the other hand, Media Tek has announced a SoC qualified as overpowered: the Dimensity 2000 chip combining ARMv9 architecture and 4mm engraving.

Following these two new data and to counter them, Qualcomm decided to renew its range. In fact, the company has rather improve the performances of the existing Snapdragon platforms. Deepu John, senior director of product management said:

“Mid-range smartphones are expected to be the main driver of accelerated adoption of 5G devices, especially in emerging regions; these four new additions to our roadmap create significant opportunities for our OEM customers and provide additional options to continue to meet the growing demand for our 5G and 4G mobile platforms.”

The four new processors are:

Snapdragon 778G Plus, a suite of Snapdragon 778G with enhanced GPU and CPU performance, is designed to deliver cutting-edge mobile gaming and accelerated artificial intelligence to enable new photo and video experiences.

Snapdragon 695 5G offers truly global 5G with support for both mm-wave and sub-6 GHz. This platform delivers up to 30 percent faster graphics rendering and a 15 percent improvement in processor performance (compared to the Snapdragon 690), enabling immersive gaming, high-end capture and increased productivity.

Snapdragon 485 Plus will continue to contribute to the proliferation of 5G, giving users access to truly global 5G connectivity and improved performance to power in-demand productivity and entertainment experiences. 85 new smartphones adopt Snapdragon-based development.

Snapdragon 680 4G, which is based on 6mm processing technology, is designed to deliver engaging experiences throughout the day, including optimized gaming and triple ISP with AI-enhanced low-light capture technology.

As 5G expands globally, Snapdragon 680 is participating in the continued demand for LTE experiences.

Qualcomm states:

“When we connected the phone to the Internet, the mobile revolution was born. Today, our core technologies are enabling the mobile ecosystem and can be found in all 3G, 4G and 5G smartphones. We are bringing the benefits of mobile to new industries, including automotive, Internet of Things and computing, and paving the way for a world where everything and everyone can communicate and interact seamlessly.”
