Charles Bouveyron becomes the new Director of the 3IA Côte d’Azur Institute succeeding Jean Marc Gambaudo

Charles Bouveyron became the new Director of 3IA Côte d’Azur at the beginning of the month. Drawing on his experience within the Côte d’Azur University ecosystem and his expertise in the field of artificial intelligence, he took up his post on January 1st, succeeding Jean Marc Gambaudo.

After an open recruitment process, the institute’s former Deputy Scientific Director emerged as an obvious successor to lead the 3IA Côte d’Azur. Charles Bouveyron is University Professor in Statistics at Université Côte d’Azur and heads the MAASAI research team, a joint team between Inria and Université Côte d’Azur. He is the first point of contact for both the academic world and companies.

In addition, Serena Villata takes over from Charles Bouveyron. She is in charge of research in computer science at the CNRS in the Computer Science, Signals and Systems laboratory at Sophia Antipolis (I3S). She has been appointed Deputy Scientific Director and also joins the Scientific Council of the 3IA.

The mission of Scientific Director (and Chairman of the Scientific Council) is still carried out by Nicholas Ayache, an exceptional research director at Inria, holder of the 3IA chair “AI for e-patients and e-medicine” and member of the French Academy of Sciences.

The executive management of the Institute remains in the hands of Diana Sebbar, Research Engineer at Université Côte d’Azur.

The management team also relies on specific action leaders:

  • coordination of the Institute’s relations with the industrial fabric: Amar Bouali and Marc Barret
  • coordination of training : Aurélie Delort
  • project manager : Anne Rosier

This new organisation is accompanied by a reinforcement of scientific activities by axis with the appointment of thematic managers.

Axis 1 “Core elements of AI” is led by the new Deputy Scientific Director, Serena Villata. Heading axis 2 “AI for integrative computational medicine” is Hervé Delingette, research director at Inria. The head of Area 3 “AI for computational biology and bio-inspired AI” is Laure Blanc-Féraud, CNRS Research Director at the I3S laboratory. Finally, Pierre Alliez, research director at Inria, is the head of research area 4 “AI for smart and secure territories”.
