CEA and Atos focus on artificial intelligence for industry and climate

The French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) has announced the signing of a partnership with Atos. The main objective of this agreement is to jointly conduct research and development work to support the evolution of innovative solutions, including artificial intelligence, for industries. The collaboration will cover several areas including climate change.

A partnership focused on several scientific fields including artificial intelligence

Atos and the CEA will use their respective expertise in several areas to :

  • Helping urbanized, cultivated and natural areas to better monitor their emissions, by establishing real-time assessments ofCO2 emissions – largely responsible for climate change – on regional and national scales.
  • Leveraging the performance of the Atos Quantum Learning Machine (Atos QLM) to advance the integration of NISQ processors in HPC environments, as well as the search for silicon-based qubits or new generations of robust superconducting qubits.
  • improve their research on AI, notably on trusted cloud architecture, and on the development of the cloud-edge continuum with solutions for data distribution and processing capabilities between operational technologies, computing technologies and the cloud. Homomorphic cryptography, characterization of physical security, development of pre- and post-quantum algorithms within security hardware modules will also be part of the program.

Élie Girard, CEO of Atos, discusses the themes explored in this partnership while welcoming the agreement:

“I am very pleased with this ambitious agreement with the CEA, which crowns many years of collaboration and is part of Atos’ commitment to structuring and deepening our relationships with the research community. By working together to explore major areas, such as decarbonization and sustainable digital, quantum, AI, or cybersecurity, we will contribute to the technological advances of tomorrow.”

Atos and the CEA will each bring their strengths to the project

The CEA will contribute its equipment, platforms and research infrastructure to the collaboration. Atos will mobilize its R&D teams to try to answer the problems linked to industrial and climate issues. The complementary nature of the two organizations’ activities will enable them to develop a joint R&D program and to jointly respond to calls for projects at the French and European levels. François Jacq, Director General of the CEA, commented on the signing of this partnership and the concepts that will be addressed:

“I am delighted that our relationship with Atos has been strengthened, over and above the actions developed over a long period of time in high-performance computing, by the establishment of this research partnership which will enable us to accelerate together on subjects at the heart of our missions and the impetus given by the State for the revival of our country and its industry: decarbonisation, frugal digital, artificial intelligence, quantum, cybersecurity, all present absolutely major challenges, requiring us to go beyond the frontier of knowledge and translate these advances into technologies very quickly: this is what we are going to focus on.”

The aim of this collaboration is to foster mutual support in order to work on common objectives and more specifically on the issue of climate, one of the priorities of Atos and the CEA.
