Bulgaria: Sofia Tech Park gets a supercomputer designed by French company Atos

On 11 May 2021, the new EuroHPC supercomputer at Sofia Tech Park in Bulgaria was fully assembled and delivered by Atos. The French company had been selected to build this brand new tool specialized in high performance computing. This announcement follows the acquisition of the Vega supercomputerin Slovenia.

Based on Atos’ BullSequana XH2000 architecture, the new facility aims to improve European scientific research and foster innovation by providing access to HPC infrastructure and services. The supercomputer is co-financed by the Republic of Bulgaria and EuroHPC JU with a joint investment of €11.5 million.

Peter Statev, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Sofia Tech Park, welcomed the arrival of this infrastructure at his research centre:

“The Atos team impressed us with their professionalism, which in particular saved time on the initial delivery and installation schedule. The great challenge for the team of the “Petascale Supercomputer – Bulgaria” Consortium is to create and establish an essential link between the academic and industrial sectors, the Sofia Tech Park and the Petascale computer. In this regard, we are communicating with existing EuroHPC centers and have initiated meetings with academic and industrial representatives. We have already received the first requests to solve pragmatic tasks in chemistry, medicine and biology. Of course, we are also looking to the future – we are discussing with Atos to benefit from their experience and technologies in the field of quantum computing.”

Agnès Boudot, Senior Vice President, Head of HPC & Quantum at Atos, spoke about the brand’s contributions to artificial intelligence in a variety of areas:

“As Europe’s leading supercomputer manufacturer, we are proud to help European industrial and academic researchers accelerate scientific discovery and develop solutions to today’s challenges in healthcare, energy and agriculture. The use of artificial intelligence in research has increased the need for greater flexibility and versatility in supercomputers, and this is exactly what we can provide with our BullSequana XH2000, which offers our customers access to new capabilities of hybrid workloads.”

With this latest acquisition, Bulgaria aims to grow in the field of artificial intelligence and intends to become a strategic high-tech hub.
