Atos and Siemens test Digital Twin, a solution based on AI, IoT and advanced data analysis for the pharmaceutical industry

Atos and Siemens have announced the introduction of their Process Digital Twin solution to the pharmaceutical industry. Powered by IoT, artificial intelligence and advanced data analysis, this tool aims to improve overall performance with an innovative solution for digital replication of the pharmaceutical production process.

The “Process Digital Twin” solution is currently being tested in the pharmaceutical industry for pharmaceutical manufacturing. It has been designed to provide increased efficiency and flexibility in product manufacturing and is powered by IoT, artificial intelligence and advanced data analysis.

On a pilot basis, this solution opens up new possibilities, such as the development of a sustainable process – including reducing overall testing time and waste, ensuring consistent quality, and facilitating the transition to new “quality by design” models to get the right product the first time. The solution also offers optimized measures for process quality and reliability.

The production and marketing of pharmaceutical products is a complex and lengthy process. To meet these challenges, one of the international pharmaceutical partners of Atos and Siemens decided to test the new innovative solution, designed and developed through the joint investment and business collaboration of the Atos-Siemens global strategic alliance.

The “Process Digital Twin” is a complete virtual replica of a specific step in the manufacturing process, linked to IoT sensors installed on the real factory. It generates complex volumes of data and gives an instant view of all the details of the operations. By combining virtual and physical representations of the process, and using predictive models and real-time analysis, Atos and Siemens are helping the pharmaceutical industry to reinvent key elements of the manufacturing environment.

“We are delighted to put digital technologies at the heart of the pharmaceutical industry to help the sector meet the multiple challenges of today and tomorrow,” said Paul Albada Jelgersma, SVP, Head of Codex Services for IoT and Siemens MindSphere at Atos.

“With the Process Digital Twin solution developed by Atos and Siemens, we are creating a strong digital footprint for pharmaceuticals throughout the entire process development cycle, from the design phase to production.”

Rebecca Vangenechten, Head of Pharmaceuticals at Siemens, said:

“Digitalization at every step of the value chain will probably help the pharmaceutical industry get pharmaceuticals from the lab to the patient faster. It has been an exciting journey where the partners have created the basis for the development and manufacture of future processes based on science, technology and innovation”.

Atos brings its expertise in IT infrastructure, consulting, integration and data science, including Codex expertise in Artificial Intelligence and IoT solutions and services. Siemens provides its Digital Enterprise expertise in EO systems for the pharmaceutical industry, with for example Simatic Sipat for real-time quality control and StarCCM+ & HEEDS for process modeling and simulation.

The nature of Atos and Siemens’ pre-integrated Digital Twin solution enables its deployment in all production processes, regardless of their size or complexity. By fine-tuning the core technology elements, Atos and Siemens can more effectively replicate the use case of the Digital Twin solution for each new customer – in the pharmaceutical, chemical, process manufacturing and other markets.
