Focus on the European research project HosmartAI “Hospital Smart development based on AI

The European research project HosmartAI aims to provide Europe with a strong, efficient, sustainable and resilient healthcare system, benefiting from the AI capabilities of European technology players to generate impact. To this end, a common open integration platform with the necessary tools to facilitate and measure the benefits of the integration of digital technologies (robotics and AI) for healthcare professionals, patients, information system managers and administrations of healthcare organizations will be created.

Funded with €10 Ms. by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program, HostmartAI has 24 partners from 12 different countries:

  • Universities and research centers (Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, ETH Zürich, Univerza v Mariboru, ITCL Centro Tecnológico);
  • SMEs (Green Communications, Telematic Medical Applications, ECLEXYS, F6S, PharmEcons, Tera Globus, Ninety-One, EIT Health Germany);
  • Associations (European Hospital and Healthcare Federation, European Federation for Medical Informatics);
  • Hospitals and health centers (UKC Maribor, San Camillo IRCCS SRL, Hospital Universitario La Paz, CHU de Liège, Panepistimiako Geniko Nosokomeio Thessalonikis AXEPA, Fundación INTRAS);
  • Large companies (INTRASOFT International, PHILIPS, VIMAR energia positiva).

The project was virtually launched in February 2021, so it was on June 8 and 9 that the consortium partners actually met for the first time, during the plenary meeting in Athens. They were thus able to take stock of the progress of various works but also to consider their contributions to the general objectives and the impact of the project.

Project objectives

The mission of the HosmartAI project has 9 objectives, divided into three main categories

Business Objectives

Business objectives focus on pre-commercial evaluation of solutions and validation of business assumptions, ecosystem scalability potential, dissemination of acquired excellence and market entry.

Technical Objectives

The technical objectives address the delivery and deployment of the HosmartAI platform and value-added services in the real world.

Scientific Objectives

The scientific objectives focus on research to provide a rigorous and autonomous methodology to drive the implementation and define its operational principles.

The Common Open Integration Platform

The platform will be validated through eight large-scale pilot projects that will implement and evaluate improvements in medical diagnosis, surgical interventions, disease prevention and treatment, and rehabilitation and long-term care support in a variety of hospitals and care facilities.

These eight AI-powered pilot applications, currently being tested, involve 3,000 patients, 300 healthcare staff, and 600 stakeholders from five hospitals in Greece, Spain, Italy, Belgium, and Slovenia.

The eight pilot projects

Pilot #1: Development of a user-friendly and interpretable computer-aided diagnostic system (ICADx) to support and optimize clinical decision making in a multi-specialty healthcare environment;

Pilot #2: Optimizing the use of radiation therapy;

Pilot #3: Improving treatment through the use of innovative technologies and robotics in the rehabilitation process;

Pilot #4: Robotic systems for minimally invasive operations;

Pilot #5: Assistive care in the hospital: robotic nursing;

Pilot #6: Functional care in health centers: virtual assistant;

Pilot #7: Intelligent Cathlab Assistant;

Pilot #8: Prognosis of cancer patients and their response to treatment by combining multi-omics data.

They could ultimately benefit the treatment of cancer, gastrointestinal and thoracic disorders, cardiovascular and neurological diseases, elderly care and neuropsychological rehabilitation, as well as fetal growth retardation and prematurity.
