Belgium: Liège-based start-up OSIMIS announces a new round of financing of 1.6 million euros

Three years after raising €2.3 million, Osimis, a Liège-based start-up that provides solutions for clinical teams and software vendors in the field of medical imaging, announced in early February a new round of financing of €1.6 million from existing shareholders (W.IN.G, Noshaq, Trasis, Marc Nolet, Jacques Galloy) and an association of radiologists, who already use its technology. This investment also includes financing from Novallia and Sofinex, two growth acceleration organizations of the Walloon Region.

The market for AI in medical imaging is growing rapidly. But while more and more radiologists are interested in adopting AI solutions, integrating them individually would be far too expensive.

Created in 2015, from the development of Orthanc, incubated by WS (Walloon technology incubator), the start-up Osimis is a pioneer in the field of medical imaging software solutions, associated solutions and related services aiming to enable interoperability of actors in the clinical and medical research field. Based on the worldwide success of Orthanc, Osimis’ Lify commercial platform offers a quick and ergonomic take-up and deployment of Orthanc for the healthcare sector: inter-hospital exchanges, patient distribution, integration with artificial intelligence partners. Orthanc technology sets the standards for data management, while Osimis software services continuously reform the processing and diagnosis of medical imaging data. Sebastian Jodogne developed the free and open-source software Orthanc and thus received on March 22, 2015 in Boston (USA), the award for free software development from the Free Software Foundation of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). CEO of Osimis, he stated:

“As the initiator of the project in an academic setting thanks to the support of the University Hospital of Liege, I am delighted that we are opening a new page in the already long history of the Orthanc free and open-source ecosystem. The scientific and societal impact of Orthanc has been internationally acclaimed, and is part of a philosophy of openness and knowledge dissemination.”

Osimis’ Lify solution simplifies the exchange and consultation of medical imaging exams. As an open source web platform (software as a service – SaaS), it allows medical teams, radiologists, hospitals and their patients to store, view, process and exchange data between local devices as well as in the cloud. It offers the advantage of avoiding unnecessary repetition of examinations. To further develop the Lify platform, Osimis has collaborated with various foreign research centers such as IRCAD (Research Institute against Digestive Cancer) in France and UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) in the USA. The development of the platform is medically supervised by Professor Erik Ranschaert, an internationally renowned expert in medical imaging.

This new funding will allow Osimis to strengthen its teams and accelerate its developments.
